How to type Traditional Chinese characters using Han Yu Pinyin on Windows 7
- From Control Panel->Clock, Language and Region->Language and Region, click and "Region and Language" dialog appears, select "Keyboards and Languages" tab.
- Click "Change Keyboards..." button, "Text Services and Input Languages" dialog appears.
- At the lower half of General tab, click "Add" button, and "Add Input Language" dialog appears.
- Scroll to find "Chinese (Tradiational, Taiwan)", click + to expand and see "Keyboard", check "Chinese (Traditional) - New Phonetic", then press the "OK" button.
- Back in the "Text Services and Input Langues" dialog, select "Chinese (Traditional) - New Phonetic" in the "Installed services".
- Click "Properties" button, "Microsoft New Phonetic IME 10.1 Settings" dialog appears.
- Select "Keyboard" tab, in "Keyboard layout", choose your preferred keyboard layout to be "HanYu Pinyin", then press the "OK" button.
Switch between input languages
By Default, the language bar will be docked in the taskbar. Use it to switch the input languages or
use keyboard "Left Alt+Shift" to switch between Chinese and English.
Start typing
Open a word document. Switch input language to Chinese by "Left Alt+Shift", and type "han4", and use down arrow (↓) key to see the wordlist, select 漢 from the list. Type "yu3", and use down arrow (↓) key to see the wordlist, select 語 from the list.
Use "v" for special character "ü"
For example, to type 女(nü3) and 綠(lü4), type (nv3) and (lv4) instead.
How to type Traditional Chinese characters using Pinyin on Mac OS 10.6.x
- Open System Preferences->Language & Text->Input Sources
- Check the box next to 繁體中文.
- Go to the Input Menu on the top menu bar.
- If you are using a US system, it should be a US flag icon. Drop down to see several different input methods for Chinese.
Switch between input languages
- From the Input Menu, select Pinyin - Traditional for Chinese input.
- Select US for English input.
